TL:DR

  • NCDEX was said to be working on announcing two equity indices on 22 October 2026.

  • Its official website tracks NDEX 20 stocks and FINNDEX tracks 15 stocks in the financial sector, and both are listed on ’s official website.

  • Equity derivatives trading is to begin in June 2027, subject to regulatory approvals and market readiness.

  • NCDEX reported FY26 consolidated total income of Rs. 153.37 crore but a net loss of Rs. 46.24 crore.

Introduction

The National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) is getting closer to extending its wings in India’s equity market. On October 21, 2026, the exchange was to launch two equity indices on October 22 and re-launch two agricultural indices.

This is a big development for the investors tracking NCDEX unlisted shares as the company is looking to diversify beyond its traditional commodity derivatives business.

NCDEX's official website now describes two equity indices, NDEX and FINNDEX. However, the introduction of index benchmarks should not be confused with the commencement of equity cash or derivatives trading, which remains subject to regulatory and operational requirements.

Here’s what the proposed expansion means for the growth prospects of the exchange, financial performance and investors in unlisted shares.

What Are the New NCDEX Equity Indices?

NCDEX's proposed equity indices are part of its strategy to develop a multi-asset exchange.

The exchange's official website describes two indices intended to represent different areas of India's equity market.

NDEX

FINNDEX

Sector-focused benchmark for financial companies

1. NDEX: Total Market Stock Index

The NDEX benchmark is constituted of 20 large and liquid stocks chosen from the companies listed on the National Stock Exchange. The methodology considers several factors such as size, liquidity, beta and volatility of the company.

Its constituents are HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel, State Bank of India and Infosys.

NDEX has been designed to help market benchmarking and could be used as the underlying reference for investment products such as index funds, ETFs and derivatives, subject to necessary approvals.

2. FINNDEX: Index of Financial Services

The FINNDEX is a sectoral index of 15 companies from the financial sector of India excluding insurance companies. Its constituents include ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, State Bank of India, Bajaj Finance, BSE, MCX, CDSL and Jio Financial Services.

The index could provide a benchmark for financial-sector investment products and derivatives if such products receive the required approvals.

NCDEX Equity Market Launch: What Is the Latest Update?

The planned equity indices are one part of NCDEX's broader expansion into equity trading. The exchange had received the in-principle approval from SEBI for its proposed equity and equity derivatives segments on July 29, 2025.

The launch of equity derivatives has been deferred to June 2027.The timeline is tentative with earlier reporting suggesting July 2027. The delay is due to regulatory concerns that adequate liquidity and participation in the cash equity market should be established before derivatives are launched.

The objective for NCDEX is to create a sustainable equity trading platform and not to introduce new products without adequate market activity.

The capital expansion also bolstered the exchange’s financial resources as it prepared to move into new market segments.

Is The Exchange Profitable? NCDEX FY26 Results

The latest annual financials of NCDEX offer an important context to investors looking at its expansion plans. The exchange reported consolidated total income of Rs. 153.37 crore in FY26, compared with Rs. 122.06 crore in FY25.

But revenues from operations grew only slightly and the company continued to report losses.

Total income grew by approximately 25.65%, but operating income increased by 2.55%.

This is important because a large part of the increase in total income came from other income and not from higher operating revenue.FY25 also witnessed exceptional income of around Rs. 344 crore, which makes the reported profit of the previous year an inappropriate benchmark for recurring profitability.

Hence, investors should look at NCDEX’s ability to generate sustainable income from its regular exchange and market infrastructure operations.

How NCDEX Equity Indices Impact Unlisted Shares?

The proposed equity indices and the business diversification may influence the long term prospects of NCDEX unlisted shares.

But whether those efforts translate into results depends on whether the exchange can turn them into real revenue.

1. Potential Revenue Diversification

NCDEX has historically depended on commodity-market activity. Entering equity trading could eventually create additional sources of income through trading-related fees, clearing services and other exchange infrastructure activities.

Index licensing and data-related services may also become opportunities if NCDEX commercialises these products successfully. However, index publication alone does not establish a new revenue stream.

2. Greater participation of investors and dealers

The growth of the exchange could bring in more brokers and institutional players. NCDEX’s existing infrastructure of commodity markets and rural distribution network may also help in customer acquisition.

The trick will be to create enough liquidity to rival India's established equity bourses.

3. Execution Risks and Profitability

Equity market infrastructure is about technology, compliance, clearing systems and market development and building it requires investment. These expenses can be a drag on profitability before the company even sees much transaction revenue.

The success of NCDEX’s diversification will depend on generating substantial trading volumes and repeat revenues, while keeping costs in check.

NCDEX Unlisted Share Price: What Should Investors Monitor

Things to look for:

  • Official announcements on the launch of equity cash trading and derivatives.

  • Growth in trading volumes, active members and market participation.

  • Revenue contribution from new business segments.

  • Operating profitability and cash flow.

  • Valuation of unlisted shares of NCDEX and its liquidity.

Conclusion

The proposed NCDEX equity indices reflect the exchange's strategy to expand beyond agricultural commodity derivatives. The introduction of NDEX and FINNDEX benchmarks, investment in market infrastructure and launch of NCDEX Nidhi provide a foundation for business diversification.

But the financial picture is still mixed.NCDEX reported higher total income in FY26 and improving Q1 FY27 results; however, the exchange continues to incur losses. For investors tracking NCDEX unlisted shares, the important question is whether these new initiatives can generate sustainable trading volumes, recurring revenues and improved profitability.

The exchange's execution over the coming quarters will be more important than the announcement of new indices alone.
