NCDEX has been going through an important transition period. While its commodity exchange remains its core business, NCDEX is now building new segments for growth beyond commodities. Its Q1 FY27 results come at a time when some of these changes could be starting to take shape. 1. Is Core Business Growing?
In Q1 FY27, Revenue from operations remained almost flat, nearly 0.2% QoQ, from Rs 26.09 cr to Rs 26.13 cr. While other income reported around 28.6% QoQ, from Rs 19.04 cr to Rs 24.48 cr. Hence, it supported the total income, which increased significantly by 12.1% QoQ.
2. NCDEX Losses Narrowed and EPS Improved
NCDEX Loss Before Tax declined from Rs. 14.77 Cr to Rs. 11.64 Cr in Q1 FY27. Net losses are narrowed by 15.3% QoQ from Rs. 9.80 cr to Rs. 8.30 cr, while EPS improved from -Rs. 1.01 to -Rs. 0.92 in Q1 FY27.
One of the reasons behind the 15.3% loss decline was likely that expenses grew more slowly than income by around 3% QoQ. Therefore, lower loss was driven by growth in other income and could be overall better cost absorption than by growth in core operating revenue.
3. Commodity Business Remains the Biggest Challenge
The major concern remains the NCDEX core commodity exchange business. The Commodity Exchange Services segment reported a loss of Rs. 17.90 Cr in Q1 FY27, compared to a Rs. 16.35 Cr loss in Q4 FY26. This tells us segment loss could actually widen sequentially, even if overall consolidated loss narrowed.
Part of the reason could be regulatory. The company has faced restrictions on fresh positions and the launch of new contracts in certain commodities. According to the financial report, these restrictions could have affected the group's transaction-charge revenue. The suspension has been extended up to March 31, 2027. Also, the exchange states that these commodity suspensions could lead to losses and negative operating cash flows.
NCDEX's Diversification Strategy
NCDEX, facing challenges in its traditional business, is looking to diversify its revenue through mutual fund services and equity-related businesses. Although exchange has already taken steps in these segments, it could still be at an early stage currently.
1. Mutual Fund Platform - NCDEX Nidhi
NCDEX received final SEBI approval on July 20, 2026, for the Mutual Fund Platform, followed by the launch of NCDEX Nidhi on July 29, 2026. Hence, the exchange added a new business segment beyond its traditional commodity exchange operations, believing that it could help to bring new investors from tier 2 and tier 3 cities on the mutual fund platform.
2. Entry Into Equity & Equity Derivatives
Secondly, NCDEX is pursuing entry into the Equity & Equity Derivatives segment. The exchange believes that adding this segment could be part of India’s fastest-growing financial market segment. The exchange further mentions that before the end of FY26-27, plans are to launch the equity segment, which will be followed by the equity derivatives segment within 4-6 months.
Also, the company has already raised capital to support this expansion, with Rs. 761.83 Cr in net proceeds from its Rs. 770 Cr preferential issue, primarily earmarked for the equity and equity derivatives segment and related investments and expenses.

Conclusion
NCDEX's Q1 FY27 results show an improvement in consolidated losses, but the core commodity business remains under pressure. Revenue from Operations was almost flat QoQ, while higher Other Income supported the increase in Total Income. With regulatory restrictions continuing on commodities, the success of NCDEX Nidhi and its planned entry into Equity & Equity Derivatives will be critical to creating new revenue streams and moving the company towards sustainable profitability.
