Indian Gas Exchange (IGX) had its busiest half-year on record in H1 FY27 (April to September 2026), trading 69.52 million MMBtu, up 70.78% on a year earlier. September stood out: volume rose 208.22% to a record 17.76 million MMBtu.
Power producers bought more, free-market gas gained share, and buyers wanted more flexible ways to purchase. With the proposed IPO also moving forward, investors have plenty to look at here.

May 26 got a lift from power-sector demand. June 26 fell from May but still beat June 25 comfortably. Growth picked up again in July and carried through August, and September then topped the earlier monthly record of 15.86 million MMBtu, set in April 2025. Across the half-year, IGX executed 1,351 trades.
IGX Traded Volume: CY2024–CY2026
The calendar-year numbers show how far the exchange has come.
Calendar Year | Traded Volume (Million MMBtu) | Growth |
CY2024 | 48.52 | N/A |
CY2025 | 78.40 | +62 YoY |
CY2026 (Jan-Sep) | 88.11 | +12.4% vs full CY2025 |
Volume rose 62% from CY2024 to CY2025. By September 2026, the published monthly figures already added up to 88.11 million MMBtu, more than all of CY2025 with three months still left. That shows the pace of growth, but nine months set against twelve is not a full-year growth rate.
Why Is IGX Trading Volume Increasing?
Power Sector Demand
Power producers traded 10.36 million MMBtu in September, roughly 58% of the month's volume. Most of it, 65.75%, went through balance-of-month power contracts, and another 30.32% through intraday and day-ahead contracts. Producers are clearly using the exchange to adjust supply as generation needs change. For scale, that one month of power trading was bigger than all of IGX's June volume (8.19 million MMBtu).
Free-Market Gas
Free-market gas accounted for 57.13% of H1 FY27 volume, with the other 42.87% coming from domestic HPHT gas sold at ceiling prices. By September, the free-market share had climbed to 72.23%, around 12.8 million MMBtu. The difference matters: ceiling-price gas is capped, while free-market gas is priced by buyers and sellers, so more of the exchange's trading now responds to market demand.
Contract Types and Delivery Points
IGX sells standardised contracts, which let buyers match purchases to when and where they need gas. Monthly contracts made up 49.11% of H1 FY27 volume and balance-of-month contracts another 18.62%. By September 2026, the exchange covered 19 delivery points, from LNG terminals and pipeline interconnections to domestic gas fields, so buyers across the country can use it.
IGX Gas Prices: What Changed in September?
Prices climbed with volumes. IGX's Gas Index of India (GIXI) reached Rs. 2,712 per MMBtu in September 2026, up 160.77% on the year and 29.02% on the month. Buyers are paying a lot more for gas, which makes volumes and prices a pair to read together. The open question for investors is whether trading holds up if prices stay this high.
IGX IPO Update: SEBI Clearance Received
SEBI issued its observation letter for the proposed IPO on October 12, 2026, allowing IGX to proceed with the issue. The issue is entirely an offer for sale of up to 1.67 crore equity shares by promoter Indian Energy Exchange (IEX), so IGX gets no fresh capital and the proceeds go to the seller. That leaves the trading business as the main thing to judge. The price band and subscription dates have not yet been announced.
What Lies Ahead for IGX?
IGX's record H1 FY27 points to more buyers turning to exchange-based gas trading, with 1,351 trades over the half-year. Power demand, free-market gas, and flexible contracts did most of the work. What happens next depends on gas supply, prices, and whether big consumers continue to show up. Volumes are at new highs, and the IPO is moving, so the next few months of data will matter for the valuation of IGX Unlisted Shares.
