1. Total Income Improved, Led by Treasury Earnings
MSEI's total income increased by 11.3% QoQ, from Rs. 18.24 cr in Q4 FY26 to Rs. 20.30 cr in Q1 FY27. The increase was primarily driven by Other Income, which rose to Rs. 19.65 cr from Rs. 17.48 cr in the previous quarter. The growth of total income was largely supported by treasury and investment income rather than the MSEI’s core exchange business.
2. Revenue from Operations Continues to Remain Weak
Despite higher total income, Revenue from operations declined sequentially to 14.5%, from Rs. 0.76 cr in Q4 FY26 to Rs. 0.65 cr in Q1 FY27. For a stock exchange, operating revenue reflects the strength of its core business. The decline suggests that higher trading activity may yet translate into higher transaction-related income.
3. How Does MSEI Make Money?
Income Source (Rs. Cr.) | Q1 FY27 | Contribution |
Revenue from Operations | 0.65 | 3.2% |
Other Income | 19.65 | 96.8% |
Total Income | 20.30 | 100% |
One of the biggest takeaways from the quarter is the company's income mix. By observing the contribution, we can see that nearly 97% of MSEI's total income came from Other Income, while only about 3% was generated from its core business operations. This highlights that treasury income continues to support the company's earnings. Going forward, investors would likely look for a larger contribution from operating revenue as trading activity improves.
4. Why Are the Expenses Increasing?
Expense Head (in Rs. Cr) | Q1 FY27 | Q4 FY26 | QoQ Change |
Technology Expenses | 8.34 | 5.54 | 50.5% |
Other Operating Expenses | 9.08 | 7.02 | 29.3% |
Administration & Other Expenses | 5.29 | 4.22 | 25.4% |
Liquidity Enhancement Scheme | 6.76 | - |
MSEI's investments continued to accelerate during Q1 FY27, with Total Expenses increasing 38.9% QoQ to Rs. 45.01 cr from Rs. 32.40 cr. The primary reasons for the higher expenses were technology upgradation, operating costs, and the newly introduced LES scheme for liquidity during the quarter.
5. EBITDA & Margin Analysis
MSEI’s EBITDA loss increased to Rs. 16.87 cr in Q1FY27 from Rs. 7.28 cr in Q4 FY26, while the EBITDA margin declined to (83.1)% from (39.9)%. Similarly, the Net Margin weakened to -121.7 % from -77.6% in the previous quarter.
6. Why Did Net Loss Increase?
Net Loss widened to Rs. 24.71 crore in Q1 FY27 from Rs. 14.16 cr in Q4 FY26, representing a 74.5% QoQ increase. The primary reason for the decline in margins was higher technology investments, liquidity enhancement, and market infrastructure.
Despite the wider loss, total Income grew 11.3% QoQ, indicating that higher expenses could outweigh earnings growth. Hence, these investments suggest that MSEI could continue to focus on strengthening its long-term operating capabilities, while profitability remains under pressure.
7. Why Did MSEI Spend Rs. 6.76 Cr on the LES?
The expenditure on LES of Rs.6.76 Cr was one of the notable developments in Q1 FY27. It was a key contributor to the increase in MSEI’s quarterly operating expenses. The objective of this investment is to improve market liquidity and encourage higher trading participation on the exchange. Normally, stronger liquidity on stock exchanges can attract more traders and increase trading activity, which may support higher operating revenue over time.
