What is NSE EGR Gold?
Gold EGR stands for Electronic Gold Receipt. It is a digital security that represents ownership of physical gold stored in vaults which is approved by SEBI. Each EGR is backed by real gold of standard purity. It trades on the NSE exchange like a stock.
It was introduced under the gold exchange framework by Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). EGRs trade on exchanges like National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
Products of Gold EGR
Gold EGRs introduced by NSE are available in different denominations and purity levels which includes common EGRs products (1 kg, 10grams,10 grams,1 gram and in fact in minimum investment in smaller denominations like 100 milligram (0.1g)), purity options (995 purity gold, 999 purity gold).Hence, these products have been standardized in order to make trading transparent in India.
How Does EGR Work?
The EGR process works through three connected stages:
A. Creation (Minting)
An investor deposits physical gold with a SEBI-accredited vault. The vault manager verifies the purity, quantity and quality standard. After verification, equivalent EGR units are issued to the investor’s demat account. Basically, the process converts physical gold into tradable electronic units.
B. Trading
EGRs are traded on NSE during market hours, which is Mon Fri from 9:30 am to 11: 30 pm/ 11: 55 pm. Prices generally track international gold spot prices in real time.Settlement happens on a T+1 basis, meaning transactions are completed on the next working day.
C. Redemption (Conversion into Physical Gold)
The EGR holder can request redemption through their broker. Once the request is processed, EGR units are extinguished (cancelled) and the vault releases equivalent physical gold, with an assay certificate confirming purity and authenticity.
Why Was EGR Launched?
The NSE launched EGRs to make India’s gold market more transparent, standardized, and regulated under SEBI. The aim is :
To offer safer storage compared to physical gold kept at home or in lockers. Here, risks might occur like thefts, damage.
To provide standardized purity comparing jewelry, where purity may vary
To reduce making charges and wastage costs associated with gold jewelry
To enable transparency with exchange-based pricing, instead depending local jeweler rates
To allow physical redemption unlike most Gold ETFs
To combine benefits of physical gold and digital trading in one product
To provide ownership similar to stocks and ETFs
To improve liquidity compared to physical bullion sales
To allow fractional investment starting from 100 mg. This could be more affordable than traditional gold bars or coins.
To create a regulated gold ecosystem under SEBI regulations
To create liquidity, while trading gold like stocks through T+1 settlement
To ensure every unit is backed on a 1:1 basis by physical gold stored in SEBI approved vaults.
Hence, to bridge the gap between traditional gold ownership and modern financial investing methods.
Drawbacks of EGR
The drawbacks of EGRs are:
Limited liquidity as the market is still developing
Lower participation from institutional investors currently
Higher transaction costs compared to Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs)
Retail investors may likely face concerns around easy exit opportunities
Gold price volatility can impact short-term returns
Competition from established alternatives like physical gold, Gold ETFs, and SGBs might keep adoption slower
How to Buy Nse Egr Gold?
If investors are interested in EGRs then demat and trading accounts are needed . Investor having a trading account linked with a SEBI-registered broker (e.g., Zerodha, Groww, Angel One, HDFC Sky).
Investors can log in to their trading platform, search for EGR products, and buy them in the same way as stocks or ETFs. After settlement, the EGR units are credited to the investor’s demat account.
Investors can hold, trade, or sell EGRs on the exchange during market hours. Eligible EGR units can also be redeemed into physical gold bars or coins, subject to exchange and vault manager guidelines.
