TL;DR

  1. The NSE IPO opens for public subscription on September 17, 2026, and closes on September 21, 2026.

  2. The NSE IPO price band is fixed at Rs.1,700-Rs.1,785 per share, valuing the National Stock Exchange (NSE) at roughly Rs 4.42 lakh crore at the top end.

  3. The issue is an Offer for Sale (OFS) of up to 12.64 crore shares worth approximately Rs.22,561.57 crore, NSE itself receives no proceeds.

  4. Anchor bidding closed on September 16, 2026, with the anchor book settling at around Rs 6,000-6,250 crore, trimmed from an initially expected Rs 9,000 crore, even as NSE's CEO called institutional demand "unexpectedly large".

  5. NSE IPO GMP as of September 16 was around Rs.145-165, indicating a possible listing gain of 8-9%, sharply down from levels of over Rs 200 a week ago. Allotment is expected on September 22, with listing tentatively scheduled for September 24, 2026, exclusively on BSE.

What is the NSE IPO?

The NSE (National Stock Exchange of India) is India’s largest financial market by market capitalisation and the operator of the benchmark Nifty 50 index. The NSE IPO is a simple Offer for Sale by existing shareholders, including SBI, CPPIB and a bunch of public-sector insurers, meaning NSE is going public itself, rather than raising fresh capital.

The exchange first attempted to go public in 2016 but the process was delayed for nearly a decade as regulators scrutinised its co-location offerings. SEBI approved the fresh IPO prospectus on September 4, 2026, clearing the way for the current issue.

NSE IPO News: Update Today?

On September 16, 2026, NSE opened its anchor investor book a day ahead of the public issue. “Institutional demand was unexpectedly large,” said NSE MD & CEO Ashish Kumar Chauhan, although the final anchor allocation was cut to about Rs. 6,000 crore from an expected Rs. 9,000 crore.

Other reports peg the final anchor book at closer to Rs 6,250 crore. Marquee names reported to be evaluating or participating in the anchor round include domestic mutual funds, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs), Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Franklin Templeton, Fidelity International, LIC, and Norges Bank.

NSE IPO Issue Size and Structure

The NSE IPO remains an entirely Offer for Sale (OFS) of up to 12.64 crore equity shares (126.4 million shares), valued at approximately Rs 22,561.57 crore at the top of the price band]. Because the issue is a pure OFS, NSE itself receives no proceeds, the entire amount goes to existing shareholders selling their stakes.

Allocation is split as 50% for QIBs, 15% for non-institutional investors (NIIs), and 35% for retail individual investors (RIIs).

Who Is Selling NSE Shares-Updated Shareholder List

Why Is the NSE IPO Important?

  1. The Nifty 50 index is operated by NSE, which is the dominant player in India’s equity derivatives market, making this one of the most closely watched listings in Indian capital market history.

  2. The exchange initially filed for an IPO in 2016 but the process was put on hold for nearly 10 years amid regulatory scrutiny including around its co-location facilities. After the Supreme Court cleared the SEBI-NSE settlement, NSE filed fresh draft papers in June 2026, received SEBI approval on September 4, 2026, and has now moved into its final listing stage.

  3. An important structural detail: NSE's shares will list exclusively on the BSE, since regulations prohibit an exchange from listing on its own trading platform. CEO Ashish Kumar Chauhan confirmed this at the IPO launch event.

Conclusion

The NSE IPO is in its final phase, with the price band set at Rs.1,700-Rs.1,785 per share and the anchor book valued at approximately Rs.6,000-Rs.6,250 crore, before the public offer is scheduled to commence on September 17, 2026.

NSE IPO GMP has cooled to around 8-9% as of September 16, down from over 15% earlier this month, but strong institutional interest keeps this among 2026’s most closely tracked listings. Track subscription numbers and GMP through the September 17-21 window before deciding, and remember the shares list on the BSE-not the NSE-around September 24, 2026.
